Lunacy 2009

The game Lunacy is played on a 54 feet by 27 feet low friction field. The human players are positioned outside the arena while the robots are positioned in the arena. The human players who are in their fueling stations can score by shooting their moon rocks into the opposing robot that is placed in front of them. But they can only shoot 7 prior to the start of the match out of the 20 that they were given. The robots are equipped with slippery wheels and payload trailers. The objective of the game is to score as many orbit balls, empty cells and super cells in the opposing robot or team. The empty cells and super cells are different during each match because it is determined by the outcome of their previous match. But if a team has not played a match yet, the human player receives 4 empty cells and 2 super cells.

Each game is played with two different teams (the red alliance and the blue alliance) and there are three robots on each team making a total of six robots per game. For each robot, there are three players in the driver station that control the robots actions. The robots are positioned in front of the four fueling stations and the two outposts. During the first 15 seconds of play the robots are in autonomous mode which means that they drive on their own without the help of any human players. After the 15 seconds are up, the robots are then out of autonomous mode and are teleoperated for the remaining 2 minutes of the game.

Each robots trailer begins empty during each match and when the match is over the robot can have as many moon rocks and empty cells that the opposing team has thrown into it. For every moon rock and empty cell scored in the opponents trailer is worth 2 points, while a super cell that is scored is worth 15 points. Super cells can not be played until they are activated and in order to do that, the robot must deliver an empty cell from their outpost to their fueling station. However the super cells can only be played during the last 20 seconds of the match. When the match is over, the teams score is added by how many moon rocks are in their opponents trailer, and the team with the most points win and move on to the next round.
